RIIWHS205D Control traffic with stop-slow bat

This course provides training in controlling traffic with a stop-slow bat for a range of road conditions.

Introduction:

Target Audience:

This course is intended for any person who is required to undertake Control of Traffic on a road way, as part of their duties.
 
Full course pre-requisite requirements:  Can be met by holding a Work Safely in the Construction Industry White Card, or equivalent, and having held a driving licence for a continuous 12 month period with in the last five years. Participants/ employers must also confirm work placement arrangements prior to commencement of training by way of a Traffic Control Agreement (include link) to confirm suitable supervision can be provided.
 
Renewal requirements: Renewals are required every three (3) years, and participants must be able to demonstrate currency of industry practice with a minimum of 32 hours in the last 12 months performing duties as a Traffic Controller.
 
Renewal course pre-requisite requirements:  Can be met by holding a Current Traffic Controller Industry Authority Card, and having held a driving licence for a continuous 12 month period with in the last five years. Evidence of Currency of Industry Practice must also be provided prior to course commencement.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Know and understand relevant workplace health and safety legislation, standards and codes of practice
  • Identify and describe the required Traffic Controller compliance documentation
  • Understand the legal powers to control traffic and the Traffic Controller Authority
  • Control traffic in road way conditions
  • Understand and use traffic management plans, appropriate traffic control signage, devices and barricades
  • Understand Traffic Control set-up, including placement of Traffic Controller symbolic/ PTS sign and associated Traffic Controller related signage and devices, and Traffic Controller positioning
  • Communicate using radio operations, hand signals, devices and signage
  • Understand the affects of travel speed and vehicle mass stopping distances
  • Understand timely control of traffic with a stop-slow bat that safely, effectively and efficiently meets therequired outcomes
  • Apply legislative, environmental, organisational and site requirements/ procedures for traffic management control
  • Demonstrate the sequence of stop/slow in accordance with TCASAP
  • Apply site and equipment safety requirements including safe operating in all terrains, recognising and preventing hazards and using safe operating procedures

Learning Methods:

Full course: 1-day face-to-face theory & practical training, and theory assessment. Upon completion of the face-to-face training, 20 hours of workplace based training is to be completed and verified by way of a logbook, within three (3) months, before the 1-day workplace-based assessment can be carried out.
 
Renewal course: 4-6 hours face-to-face theory and practical renewal training, and final assessment.

Program Benefits:

  • Participants will be issued with a Statement of Attainment upon successful completion of the unit of competency.
  • Successful participants, upon application approval to the Department of Queensland Transport and Main Roads (TMR), will be issued with a Traffic Controller Industry Authority Card valid for three (3) years.
